The Rocky Horror Show

A tip of the hat to director Jonne Dendinger for this charming bit of depravity. She keeps things simple, with the focus on the performers themselves. And they never let us down. Dendinger also plays keyboard and conducts the hot five-piece combo. Jonne Dendinger's The Rocky Horror Show at Cowpoke's demonstrated how much magic you can create late-night on a shoe string.

Jonne Dendinger’s production of The Rocky Horror Show, its regional premiere, doesn’t break any new ground but we’re probably not yet ready for, nor would RHS purists allow, any radical reinterpretation of the original template. Rather, she uses the Cowpokes space efficiently and keeps the proceedings going at a lively clip even overcoming, for the most part, the script’s tendency to sag in the second act. A nice touch is "The Phantomettes," a kind of Greek chorus, that I wouldn’t have minded seeing more of. Dendinger has assembled a crackerjack cast starting with local mystery writer Tony Fennelly as The Narrator; picture a twisted Alistair Cooke, if you will. She delivers just the right touch of wacked out gravitas and is quite a sight when doing the Time Warp.

Blood Brothers

In fact, in many ways, "poor little rich boy" Eddie is the most poignant character in the play -- as is evident in Jonathan Frick's extraordinarily sensitive and honest performance…in Jonne Dendinger's admirable production. The sets (uncredited) are simple but effective clusters of props against a background of gray brick, which serves both for urban squalor and upscale interior. Director Dendinger conducts the four-piece band from the keyboard.
